What Matt Clayton Stands for:

Property Tax Cuts

As a Republican committed to fiscal conservatism and putting taxpayers first, Matthew supports significant property tax cuts for all homeowners in St. Joseph County. High property taxes burden working families and stifle economic growth. By slashing taxes responsibly, we can return hard-earned money to residents, stimulate local spending, and make our community more affordable for everyone, from young families to retirees.

Controlling Spending

Matthew stands firm against wasteful government spending. He will vote NO on any budget that increases spending beyond last year's levels plus inflation. As a frontline firefighter who has seen how inefficient bureaucracy wastes resources, Matthew knows we must prioritize essential services like public safety and infrastructure without ballooning the budget. Conservative principles demand we live within our means, just like Hoosier families do every day.

Returning Budget Surpluses to Taxpayers

St. Joseph County's cash balance is three times higher than necessary, tying up millions that belong to taxpayers. Matthew proposes returning 75% of all surpluses directly to residents through property tax rebates. This isn't just good policy, it's the right thing to do. Conservatives believe in giving power back to the people, not letting the government hoard your money.

Fair Raises for County Employees

Our county employees, including first responders and essential workers, deserve recognition for their hard work. Using the 2025 projected $18 million surplus, Matthew supports a 2.8% raise costing just $2.1 million, leaving plenty for taxpayer relief. As a union firefighter with over 20 years of service, Matthew understands the value of rewarding dedication while maintaining fiscal discipline. This is how we build a stronger workforce without raising taxes.

Responsible Economic Development

Matthew says yes to smart, sustainable economic development that creates jobs and boosts our tax base, but not to Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts that divert funds from essential services. Instead, he advocates redirecting annual payments from these projects straight to property tax cuts. As a conservative, Matthew believes in free-market growth that respects property rights and benefits the entire community, not special interests.

Common Sense Reforms

The government should operate efficiently, responsibly, and fairly. Matthew believes constituents should have clear and appropriate access to government funded programs they qualify for, ensuring that public resources are used as intended. By making government work smarter, these reforms can help reduce unnecessary financial burdens on local taxpayers while maintaining essential support for the community. Drawing from his experience in emergency management, Matthew knows how to cut red tape and implement practical, common-sense solutions that protect both the public and taxpayer dollars.

Collaborative Leadership

Matthew is a proven consensus builder who works well with others to get results. In his role as a Lieutenant Firefighter/Paramedic, he leads diverse teams under pressure, prioritizing cooperation over conflict. As a Republican on the County Council, he'll bring this same approach, fostering bipartisan solutions for taxpayer protection, public safety, and economic vitality. Matthew is a breath of fresh air: appealing to swing voters, county employees, unions, and homeowners through his commitment to real-world, conservative leadership.

Supporting Responsible Business Development

A thriving community grows through smart, balanced economic development, or it stagnates. Matthew supports responsible projects that bring investment and good jobs, while fully respecting the property rights and choices of landowners and farmers.

As a conservative Republican, Matthew champions free enterprise and individual freedoms. Saying no to every opportunity for growth isn’t conservative, it’s shortsighted. He will fight for thoughtful development that strengthens our economy, supports skilled trades and union workers, grows the tax base, and keeps taxes affordable for families, without unnecessary government interference.

To address community concerns, Matthew will prioritize effective contracts and agreements that ensure proper resource management and prevent any utility rate increases for residents. Matthew knows from the front lines: strong communities are built on practical progress that protects our resources and puts people first, not resistance to change.

Embracing All Jobs, Including "Temporary" Ones

Matthew believes every job counts in building a strong economy. Whether long-term or short-term (like 6-month construction roles), we must welcome investments that create opportunities. He proudly praises union trade jobs that construct our infrastructure, by definition, these are "temporary" as workers move from one project to the next, generating ongoing employment. Conservatives know that open-for-business policies lead to prosperity for families and communities.

Championing Strong, Skilled Trade Jobs

Skilled trades are the foundation of a growing economy, and St. Joseph County's success depends on supporting them. Matthew will vote in favor of pro-growth policies that attract large development projects, empowering trade unions to provide for their families. When unions thrive, they support local businesses, creating a win-win cycle for everyone. As a Republican with roots in public service, Matthew is committed to keeping our county competitive, safe, and prosperous for generations to come.
